Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach, written by Rick Marschall, is one of a series of biographies published by Thomas Nelson Publishers, called the Christian Encounters series. In this book the author does an outstanding job of setting the backdrop into the world God's Providence ordained that Bach would arrive. He details both the political and religious changes occurring in Europe that lead up to Johann's birth in 1685 to the changes in worship styles that were taking place when the Lord called him home in 1750. Johann did not record his life in a personal journal or any such medium so the book looks at his life through his work and the impact it had on his contemporaries and parishioners. Admittedly, at times while I read this book I was a slightly frustrated when the author was a bit too technical on his discussions of music theory and Bach's mastery God given skills, but I equated this to the sheer genius of this man and my lack of any formal music theory education. Bach's life was very inspiring as he purposed to do all to the Glory of God and to exalt the name of Jesus Christ. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

I received an advanced copy of this book for my review, from booksneeze.com.
