Here are some thoughts I am planning to discuss with my family tonight during our family worship:
Verse one shows us the origin of the earth. Some very, very smart men and women, what the world would call geniuses (Scientists, Philosophers, Mathematicians, etc.) do not know how the universe began. Various theories have been thought up by man to explain this, namely to get glory for themselves and take it away from God. We can define what theory is by this statement – A proposed explanation whose status is still speculative, in contrast to well-established propositions that are regarded as reporting matters of actual fact. The most prevailing theory of the origin of the cosmos is called the Big Bang Theory. According to this theory the universe, originally in an extremely hot and dense state expanded rapidly, has since cooled by expanding (which continues today). Think of a balloon or bathtub. The universe in this theory is said to have begun 13.7 billion years ago. What I am seeing is that scientists, though manly humanists (which means…) are trying to show that we humans are vey small (boarding on insignificant) and that the universe is sooooooo large! This is partly true, but we need to look at this with Christian glasses on. We are tiny but our God is big. We have limitations, but our God is perfect. We are small but our lives are not insignificant. Before God Almighty made this marvelous universe, before even time as we know it began, in the secret consul of the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), they decided that on day six of creation that they would create a man, who would be so special and unique from the rest of creation, but that, that man would be allowed to fall into sin and break covenant with his creator, thus breaking God’s Law and deserving damnation and punishment in Hell. Remember when God walked among Adam and Eve in the Garden and their relationship was so very close and personal. What would be the exact opposite, well it would be to be thrown out into the cold, frigid, lonely world. Imagine if right now you had a dog and he was transported into the woods and couldn’t find his way back, and even if he could, we would not let him back in the house. God is Holy and Righteous, therefore he must punish those who transgress His Law. His Holiness demands justice. but amazingly, mercifully, gracefully decided not to let man stay distant and out of fellowship, but instead Jesus Christ came to earth (came from heaven to earth) born as a man, live a perfect live, keeping all God’s commandments, thus earning our righteousness. Jesus Christ came to earth and those who received him he gave the right to become children of God. In Galatians 4: 4-7, we read, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
